Lower Presumpscot River Flows Free !!!

Rapids above the main drop at Presumpscot Falls, Falmouth, Maine. Prior
to its removal in October 2002, the Smelt Hill Dam completely flooded the
falls and seven miles of the lower Presumpscot River. The water line of
the Smelt Hill Dam extended to the top of the bedrock ledges on the right
of this photo.
Looking downstream at the former Smelt Hill Dam from Presumpscot Falls,
Falmouth, Maine. The walls of the bedrock gorge are 30-40 feet above the
river channel, making access difficult.
