The Destruction of Sebago Lake State Park Beach

Roger Wheeler photos

May 6, 2000. High water levels flood and topple trees at Songo Beach at Sebago Lake State Park. Lake levels were exacerbated by a state lake level plan that maintains artificially high lake levels for much of the spring and summer.

Note the recently exposed tree roots in the top photo, showing very recent erosion and removal of the beach sand around the trees. Some of the toppled pitch pines in the lower photo were over 100 years old. This indicates that recent conditions on the lake are not reflective of historic conditions.
