This is a natural ledge drop on the
Presumpscot River just upstream of the bridge
above the Cumberland Mills Dam and the SAPPI mill in downtown Westbrook.
In
this photo, the river is at its natural elevation and channel size.
The river level with the Cumberland Mills Dam at full pond level can
be seen by the exposed sand banks near the red pick-up truck. The ledge
formation is normally flooded when the Cumberland Mills Dam is at full pond
level.
This ledge drop forms the top of Ammoncongin Falls, now obscured by
the Cumberland Mills Dam and the SAPPI mill facility, which the Presumpscot
River flows under.
Because this ledge outcrop stretches across the river channel, it acts
as a hydraulic control for the river level above this location, and prevents
the water level upstream from dropping any farther than shown above.
