On May 4, 2004, the SAPPI corporation performed
repairs at the Cumberland Mills dam at Ammoncongin Falls in Westbrook. In
doing so, the Presumpscot River in downtown Westbrook was lowered to its
natural elevation and channel.
This repair operation allowed Friends
of Sebago Lake to document the natural character of the one mile reach of
the Presumpscot River from Ammoncongin Falls in Westbrook to Saccarappa
Falls in the absence of ponding created by the Cumberland Mills dam.
